Organizations and Associations
National Women's Party
The National Women's Party (NWP) was a women's organization which was formed in 1917. This organization fought for women's rights during the early 20th century in the United States, particularly for the right to vote. This picture shows women protesting outside of the White House in Washington, D.C. The NWP put its priority on passing a constitutional amendment ensuring women's right to vote. Alice Paul and Lucy Burns founded this organization which was originally named the Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage in 1913. By 1917 the name had been changed to the National Women's Party.
National American Woman's Suffrage Association
The NAWSA (National American Women Suffragist Association) which was formed in May in 1890. This association was founded by Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. It allowed the coming together of women to achieve a common goal; getting the right to vote. Thousands of women were included in this association and it was the largest and most important suffrage organization in the United States, it also was the primary promoter of women's right to vote. In 1890, the American Woman Suffrage Association formed with NAWSA, which gave this organization the strength to form the 19th amendment with the U.S. Government.
American Woman Suffrage Association
The American Woman Suffrage Association was similar to NAWSA, but they were considered "rivals". AWSA was formed in 1869 by Lucy Stone in Cleveland, Ohio. This picture demonstrates that women's rights groups and associations would bring the suffrage movement to new heights. In 1870, AWSA began publishing in "Woman's Journal", edited by Stone and her husband. "Woman's Journal" became the most prominent feminist publication of its day. Finally, in 1890, the American Woman Suffrage Association merged with the National American Woman's Suffrage Association, the two remained as NAWSA.
Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage
The Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage was founded by Alice Paul and Lucy Burns in 1903. This organization was for women who came together to fight for the suffrage amendment in the constitution. The successor to this group was the National Women's Party.
